At stumps Sachin Tendulkar, 28, and VVS Laxman four are the not out batsmen.

But, the Proteas picked up three valuable wickets during the day, that of Jaffer, Karthik, and Captain Rahul Dravid for 29, as the South African bowlers peg back the tourist's scoring rate.

Shaun Pollock 1-32 had South Africa's best bowling figures.

WHITE WASH BECKONS FOR ENGLAND?

Melbourne, Australia:

Australia will be gunning for a clean sweep, a 5-0 ?white wash? in the final test match against England after they just destroyed their European opponents in the fourth and penultimate test in Melbourne, Australia by an innings and 99 runs; winning within three days yesterday December 28, 2006 and push to an unbeatable 4-0 lead in the Five test-match Ashes series.

It will take something special from the tourists to leave Australia with a draw, or more remotely a win in the final test, taking into consideration their dismal run of form in the series. The last time Australia had a white wash over England was in a 1920-21 series.

West Indies Bow Out

Mumbai: Australia reaffirmed their status as the undisputed champions in world cricket by breaking the Champions Trophy jinx with an emphatic eight-wicket victory over title holders West Indies in a rain-marred summit showdown here.

The Australians skittled out the Caribbeans for a paltry 138 in just 30.4 overs before overhauling the revised target of 116 with 6.5 overs to spare to clinch the only silverware that had eluded them till now.

The world champions gave an awesome exhibition of their skills as they exploited the difficult track at the Brabourne stadium to the hilt to shatter the Caribbean hopes of retaining the title in a low-scoring floodlit tussle.

ENGLAND SPOIL CARIBBEAN PARTY

ENGLAND SPOIL CARIBBEAN PARTY

England’s interest in the last match in Group A of the ICC Champions Trophy was just to rescue a modicum of prestige by preventing a third straight defeat. The West Indies, on the other hand, had a lot to play for. Even though the holders of the title had already qualified for the semi-final, they had a couple of important objectives to achieve in this match.

West Indies wanted to win this match and make it three in a row and top the group so that they can make sure of meeting New Zealand in the semi-final. There is no hiding the fact that they would rather play the Black Caps than the Proteas, as their semi-final rivals, considering the tremendous form that the South Africans are in at the moment after their runaway success over Pakistan.
