Jamaica Money Market Brokers (JMMB), the island's third largest securities trader, estimates that about three per cent of the company's own-account investment portfolio is exposed to last weekend's collapse of the US investment bank, Lehman Brothers.
However, billions of dollars managed on behalf of clients, such as pension schemes, are not part of this mix and are inoculated against a Lehman contagion, JMMB indicated.

Increases in the minimum wage is
always a touchy topic since there are two competing factors that must always be
considered.
- Can
the employers afford an increase in minimum wage
- The
satisfaction of the employees
Although the satisfaction of employees is always a concern
and may be a premise to swing public opinion in an election year, the ability
to pay their wage bill should be placed at a high priority. This
is the case since an increase in employers wage bills may result in some
persons loosing their jobs.
To establish consensus the government should consult with
all parties and come up with a balance that is to the benefit of all the
players involve.

The US government is one of the three countries in the world that have initiated and maintained the Cuba blockage. Specifically, only US, Israel and Uzbekistan are the rejecting the voice of the United Nations General Assembly to seize this type of trade treatment. More cases appear every year in the news regarding the US embargo consequences on the lives of millions of Cubans. Food, medicine and other important supplies are withheld from the citizens of this island due to its political history and recent communist upheaval that led Fidel Castro in power. But although the General Assembly of the United Nations approved a resolution, condemning the economic blockade that the US has applied to Cuba for more than 35 years, the situation remains almost unchanged.

DB&G’s DIRECTORS RECOMMEND ACCEPTANCE OF SCOTIABANK’S OFFER

On Friday, October 20, Scotiabank and Scotiabank Jamaica, announced their intention to make a joint take-over bid to acquire at least 75% and not more than 80% of the shares in Dehring Bunting & Golding Ltd. (DB&G). The Offer, which is a cash bid priced at J$21.08 and TT$2.00 for each share, opened on October 23.
To communicate the response of DB&G’s Board of Directors to the Scotiabank Offer, DB&G’s Executive Chairman, Peter Bunting, held a media briefing at the DB&G Merchant Bank offices on Thursday, October 26. At the briefing, Mr. Bunting, on behalf of DB&G’s Board, recommended that DB&G’s shareholders accept the Scotiabank Offer.
