Nesbeth has returned from Calgary where he performed at the Calgary International Reggae Festival sharing stage with the likes of Beres Hammond and Kenyatta Hill and the Inner Circle Band. The artiste is beaming about his overall experience, the hospitable treatment of the promoters and the aroused reception from the large crowd in attendance of the event, made his experience “one he will not forget in a long time.”

Not often enough, positive reports of the hospitality shown to some artistes by promoters make the news. Nesbeth however, applaud the Promotional Team of the Calgary International Reggae Festival for their professionalism and hospitality. “It felt good especially after a delayed flight that had me waiting in one airport for over 5 hours and having to night over in Toronto before getting into Calgary.”

Nesbeth’s performance was well received, from beginning to end. Upon entering the stage at approximately 6:00pm he introduced his first selection and most popular song to date, “Boardhouse” to the delight of the fans whose reception blew him away and he had to perform the song repeatedly. He went on to introduce other selections such as I Love Her, Drive By, Mama’s Smile, A Nuh Suh Mi Waan Live, Reggae Music, Guns Out, Friend Killa and Baby Mother in between friendly ‘chit-chattering with the crowd then ended his set with a rendition of Bob Marley’s One Love single. At the end of his one hour encore performance, Nesbeth was recalled to do a few more tracks which he delightfully did for his now ecstatic audience before exiting the stage. He would have stayed longer but the event demanded the performances of the other artistes billed to whom eventually rocked it in their respective slots.

Now back at home, the work continues for an artiste whose unique sound and positive lyrics are slowly but surely receiving the attention of international Reggae fans as it rightfully should.

FLASHBACK! Of all the nominations vetted out by the organizers of the 2010 EME Awards that involves the artistes we represent, Bramma’s nomination was the most pleasant surprise. Understanding the intricacies of how winners are selected, this nomination was indeed a major achievement for the now seasoned Dancehall artiste who ended 2009 with an impressive STING performance, his first on a major show, while fresh from his first tour in Europe. Bramma did not walk away with that awards but went of to win “Best Reggae Song” award in Bermuda in June.

Recently, Dancehall artiste Bramma, became a victim of the treacherous act but thankfully his life has been spared. He was driving his car when he noticed another vehicle heading towards his. Bramma stopped his car, held on the horn and feverishly indicated to the other driver to stop but that did not prevent a head on collision. The driver later told Bramma that he was actually on his cell phone speaking to his girlfriend, WOW! Bramma got the shivers and headache, he drove to the hospital where he was checked and sent home, so he is fine. As for his vehicle the front was damaged but both he and the driver of the other vehicle are in dialogue. ‘Driving Cellie Users’, ‘we need to kick this habit, its DANGEROUS!!’

The housing market is tough to navigate whether or not it is a “buyer’s market” or a “seller’s market.” Some buyers/sellers feel that hiring a professional to help them wade through the process is a waste of time. In most cases, this is probably not true. Trying to handle everything alone can be challenging and time consuming at best. Worst of all it could cost you thousands of dollars. No matter if you’re buying or selling, get yourself a real estate agent … er, REALTOR®. What’s the difference anyway?

Basically, anyone licensed in your state to assist a client in buying or selling a home is a real estate agent. To acquire a real estate license, a person must be 18 years old, possess a high school diploma, and successfully pass a written exam. But to be become a REALTOR®, you must also adhere to a Code of Ethics which details the duties responsibilities to clients and customers, the general public, and to how to treat other REALTOR®s.

In addition to the Code of Ethics, here are a few other ways a REALTOR® can assist you:

■ REALTOR®s can suggest ways to accrue the down payment and explain alternative financing methods.*

■ REALTOR®s are already familiar with current real estate values, taxes, utility costs, municipal services and facilities, and may be aware of local zoning changes that could affect your decision to buy.*

■ REALTOR®s can show you only those homes best suited to your needs — size, style, features, location, accessibility to schools, transportation, shopping, and other personal preferences.*

Next time you’re in the market to buy or sell, ask your neighborhood real estate agent if they are a member of the National Association of REALTOR®s.

GRAMMY WINNING BAD BOYS OF REGGAE
HIT THE ROAD TO DELIVER
"STATE OF DA WORLD" MESSAGE;

REGGAE PIONEERS EMBARK ON BLOCKBUSTER NORTH AMERICAN TOUR WITH BERES HAMMOND

"Inner Circle is back and better than ever." The New York Daily News

Most people know Inner Circle via "Bad Boys," the ubiquitous "Cops" theme song that typified Inner Circle as one of reggae's most successful crossover groups ever. On the legendary band's latest CD State Of Da World (Shanachie Entertainment), the two-time Grammy winners create one of the hardest-hitting, most lyrically serious albums to be heard in recent years. Joined by an all-star group of guests, including the likes of Damian Marley, Stephen Marley, Jr., Reid, Morgan Heritage, Luciano, Steel Pulse's David Hinds, Mutabaruka, Lutan Fiyah and the American rock/reggae group Slightly Stoopid, Inner Circle draws on classic roots reggae to deliver a timely, moving, thought-provoking set of songs dealing with violence, poverty, hypocrisy, racial profiling, and religion. State Of Da World re-asserts the depth and power of classic reggae at a time when the reggae scene has become dominated by hyped-up computer-generated recordings too often highlighting sex and violence. It all makes perfect sense when you realize that Inner Circle are survivors, one of a handful of pioneering reggae artists still around with the credentials and artistry to do it, with a rich history--especially their classic reggae hits with lead singer Jacob Miller--too often overshadowed by their pop success. July 21st, Inner Circle will join forces with Beres Hammond for a North American tour that will run through August 29th.

State Of Da World opens with a portentous declaration by dub-poet Mutabaruka that ends with

The depth and seriousness of State Of Da World makes sense given the history of one of Jamaica's longest-lived musical institutions; the truth is that Inner Circle have been a part of many seminal moments in reggae history. "It is the right time to do it," asserts founding Inner Circle member Roger Lewis. "We started it a couple years ago as a kind of 30th Anniversary of Jacob (Miller) being with the band. So it is a special vibe in that sense. Then too, the world is going in a new direction and changing, kind of throwing away half-way stances, so we come hard this time. Also, our kind of band is kind of dying out and to a certain degree our band is one of the few bands people can remember who play a certain style of reggae."

Inner Circle is reggae Royalty. As teenagers, they backed Bob Marley on a tour of Jamaica organized by Michael Manley's PNP party. In the early Seventies, they were a rarity on the Jamaican scene, a self contained band founded by bassist Ian Lewis and guitarist Roger Lewis. Soon keyboardist Touter Harvey, an in-demand session player, joined the group and future members of the band Third World also were part of the early line-ups.

The precocious vocalist Jacob Miller joined Inner Circle in 1977 and the band quickly became one of the most popular artists in Jamaica, rivaling-some say surpassing-the popularity of Bob Marley there as they scored such hits as "Tenement Yard", "Please Mr. Officer," "Suzie Wong," "Forward Jah Jah Children" and many others. Thus it made perfect sense that Inner Circle was selected to join Bob Marley, Peter Tosh and Dennis Brown on the historic One Love Peace Concert in 1978. They were involved in starting the festival that evolved into Reggae Sunsplash.

They were also featured in the film Rockers in 1979 and were the first Jamaican band to sign with an American major label. Tragedy struck, though, in 1980 when Jacob Miller was killed in an auto accident, shattering the group.

Three years later they re-grouped in Miami and gradually began to record again with new lead singer Carlton Coffie. In 1986 they recorded the hit "Bad Boys," which was later used as the theme for the popular television show "Cops," which made "Bad Boys" a mega hit worldwide. They followed it up with another international hit, "Sweat," in 1989, winning the first of two Grammy awards and becoming one of the most popular reggae bands worldwide (the band has always been far bigger outside the United States, regularly appearing on festivals with major pop artists such as U2). Carlton Coffie was replaced by singer/guitarist Junior Jazz; drummer Lancelot Hall has been with the band for more than twenty years while Touter Harvey, Roger Lewis and Ian Lewis remain. Meanwhile, they had established Circle House, a recording studio, in Miami which eventually became a go-to studio for the likes of Alicia Keys, Mariah Carey, P Diddy, Lauryn Hill, PitBull and others. Their album releases became more sporadic due to their busy schedules but they continued to perform concerts around the world on all continents. State Of The World is the fruit of all their experiences as well as renewed creative inspiration.

"Inner Circle has always been kind of flexible," notes Roger Lewis. "Chris Blackwell put us in that crossover direction when we signed with Island but when Jacob Miller came with us first we co-wrote all those hits with him...things like "Tenement Yard," "Please Officer," "Tired Fe Lick Weed Ina Bush." With the big labels you have to go pop to a certain degree and that's ok, we made a lot of money with "Sweat", for instance, but the root and feel of what we are has always been there. You see UB40 and Dave Matthews and Eric Clapton play reggae and have success but if you're a Jamaican artist it is hard for you to be a radio group. If you do, you get labeled as "soft" or "light," like Shaggy has been. When you get serious like on this album they won't give you airplay but that's alright. The message has to come through!"

Brand Jamaica: The Mystique Revealed

Very few would disagree with the statement “Jamaica is a brand in itself.” In the global market place, the term “Brand Jamaica” now carries a distinct image of a unique culture, iconic music and dance, exotic cuisine, art and craft rooted in the island’s rich heritage, plus a delightful local language.

Undoubtedly, “Brand Jamaica” is everything distinctively and creatively Jamaican; from Blue Mountain coffeee and Bob Marley, to reggae and Rastafarian, to jerk food, herbs and seasoning. The idea of brand Jamaica is therefore best expressed and captured by the many facets of Jamaican culture, personality and identity, which together comprise the mystique now famously known as Brand Jamaica.

      Jamaican Culture

The term ‘Jamaican culture’ is perhaps the best clue to the now famous phenomena, conveniently labelled ”Brand Jamaica”. Culture can be described as traditional human activity within different aspects of everyday life. Jamaican culture can therefore be separated into various types of traditional activities or sectors. One unique feature of this culture is its diversity. Although the vast majority of Jamaicans are of African descent, there are significant minorities of Indians, Chinese, Jews, Syrians and even Caucasians. Over centuries of interaction, this ethnic diversity has created a unique culture with its own distinct Caribbean flavour and identity. It is impossible to truly appreciate and understand this culture without looking at the main aspects or sectors within which Jamaican cultural practices can be found.

Jamaican music: Jamaican music can be divided into several genres, the most famous of which is of course, reggae. As reggae music has evolved, several sub sectors have emerged, the most notable of which is dancehall. Few would disagree with the assertion that dancehall music has been the most popular of the genres of Jamaican music over the past two decades. Growing from its roots in the dancehalls of the 70’s, riding on the hypnotic dub rhythms mastered by pioneers such as King Stit and U Roy, dancehall developed a loyal, almost fierce following in the 90’s, behind dancehall giants such as Yellowman, “King” Beenie Man and Bounty Killer.

Despite the continuing controversy generated by more recent dancehall top acts such as Vybes Kartel and Mavado, this genre of Jamaican music continues to grow, with the popularity of dancehall now firmly established throughout the Caribbean, North America, Japan and most of Europe.

Of course, no discussion about Jamaican music is complete without acknowledging the contribution of the legends of modern reggae. Bob Marley stands at the top of the pedestal as the Reggae singer with a revolutionary, iconic sound, which is known in every corner of the globe, across disparate cultures.

The legacy created by the musical and lyrical genius of Bob Marley and the Wailers has gone a very far way in forming an international platform for Brand Jamaica, with its distinct embrace of Rastafari and the alluring colours that is essentially Rastafari.

That is, the colours of red, green and gold, which Rastafari has transplanted from Ethiopia and blended into the national, traditional black, green and gold symbols of Jamaican nationhood. Now to visitors and Jamaicans alike, red, green and gold have come to equally reflect and symbolise the power and majesty of “Brand Jamaica.”

In addition to Bob Marley and the Wailers, Jamaican music has produced scores of iconic performers who have played their part in building this rich, proud heritage. Names such as Jimmy Cliff, Burning Spear, Dennis Brown, Toots Hibbert and more recently Shaggy and Sean Paul, have blazed a trail of creative genius while cementing a unique Jamaican identity and personality, in the eyes and consciousness of the world.

Art and Clothing: Jamaican art and clothing are both very important in defining Jamaican culture. Nurtured by natural, intuitive talent and guided by decades of formal guidance and instruction at the Edna Manley College for the Visual Arts, local art has readily accepted the challenge of depicting and interpreting Jamaican everyday life experiences, challenges and struggles. Art forms such as sculptures, paintings, collage, craft, jewellry and photography have expressed the superb talent of Jamaicans and are already contributing to the enrichment of the cultural landscape. Not to be forgotten, Jamaican clothing, which in its most creative form relies heavily on traditional African use of primary colours; also reflects a cultural consciousness that is uniquely Jamaican.

Many wonderful examples of this powerful, hypnotic Jamaican art, craft, jewellry and clothing, can be viewed and purchased on the innovative web marketing service offered by the Le Antonio’s group of companies at www.leantoniosonline.com.

Cuisine: Jamaican cuisine, cooking, food and recipes are important aspects of the famous “Brand Jamaica.” Superb foods such as jerk chicken and pork, escovietch fish and the locally brewed, world famous Red Stripe beer have enriched the Jamaican culture. The jerk mystique is promoted in food festivals mainly in Portland, Westmoreland (where visitors habitually soak up the sunset and pristine beaches in Negril) and the nation’s capital, Kingston.

The spices and herbs used in the jerk process as well as the method of cooking the highly flavoured, spicy meats is an inheritance from the Maroons, who were the first slaves to escape from the slavery of the sugar plantations in the 18th century. They travelled deep into the thickly forested, mountainous interiors of the island and set up communities that the English were never able to conquer, despite many attempts. Out of the heroics of these rebels comes our only National heroine, the legendary Nanny of the Maroons.

The travel and marketing professionals at Le Antonio Vacation will be happy to arrange your visit to the island where you can feel the natural spirit and warmth of the people while enjoying the island’s unique and diverse cultural events, including food festivals that are held annually in different parishes across Jamaica.
