India snapped a 24 year-old cup drought when they won the inaugural ICC Twenty/20 World Cup final over sub-continent rivals, Pakistan by a mere five runs in New Wanderers Stadium, Johannesburg South Africa on Monday, September 24, 2007.
India batted first and made a fighting 157-5 off their allotment of 20 overs, with Gautam Gambhir making a top score of 75, and RP Sharma supporting with 30 not out.
Pakistan's fast bowler Umar Gul continued his good form taking 3-28.
Pakistan had victory in sight, but, only one wicket in hand, as Misbah-ul-Haq hit a six to have the game interestingly poised, as Paksitan needed just six runs to win from four balls (152-9)in the final over. But, he tried an unorthodox shot and was caught, immediately causing a rush of Indian players on and off the field of play to huddle and celebrate a pulsating final and a deserving victory.
Misbah-ul-Haq 43, lost out, made most runs for Pakistan. Man-of-the-match Irfran Pathan took 3-16, while, R.P. Singh 3-28 for India.
