*Veronica Campbell wins breathtaking 100m final
Osaka, Japan:
Veronica Campbell copped Jamaica's First Gold medal of the 2007 World Championships in Osaka, Japan, clocking 11.01 seconds to win the 100m Women's final in one of the closest race in the history of the games, on Monday, August 27, 2007.
Campbell won over a trio of US athletes who hit the tape almost simultaneously with her.
The USA's defending champion Lauryn Williams got silver in 11.01 seconds the same time as Campbell, and another American, Carmelita Jeter (11.02) took bronze, while Torri Edwards (11.05), a pre-race favourite finished out of the medals, settled for fourth.
It took minutes for the photo finish judges to decide who really won the race-it was that close, but; the Jamaican got the nod, over her American rival.
Veronica Campbell, became the only Jamaican, male or female, to win a gold medal in the 100m at the World Champs.
Yesterday, Asafa Powell took bronze in the men's 100m final.
Jamaica now has two medals-Gold, bronze.
