India has batted themselves into a good position over South Africa on the first day of the third and final cricket test in Cape Town, South Africa this morning, January 2, 2007 local time.

At stumps Sachin Tendulkar, 28, and VVS Laxman four are the not out batsmen.
Earlier in the day India looked as if they were going to run away with the match, being at one point, 153 without loss, as Wasim Jaffer 116, and Dinesh Karthik 63 executed a good opening stand at the top of the innings. But, the Proteas picked up three valuable wickets during the day, that of Jaffer, Karthik, and Captain Rahul Dravid for 29, as the South African bowlers peg back the tourist's scoring rate.

Shaun Pollock 1-32 had South Africa's best bowling figures.
The series is tied at 1-1.
